I still see copious amounts of people walking around carrying massive DSLR’s and I think to myself, why? With Sony releasing their master piece A7RII next month and all the other mirrorless options that they continue to churn out at an impressive rate people are still buying DSLR’s. Mirrorless systems are …so much smaller the bennifits would apper obvious. It’s a funny world of branding and marketing that we live in so cudos to you for doing your homework before your next camera purchase.
For landscape photography my Scottish friend Hugh Furguson has some beautiful image gallery’s taken using a mirrorless system. I also like this video made by Gary Fong about his strob work using the Sony A6000 which I usually carry in my camera bag.
Hey Jussi
For the most part I agree with you. But I funny thing happened to me about a month ago. You know you and I raved about the A6000 and I still think that is a fantastic camera. Best value for money on the market by far. However, I used it on a trip to Central Asia where most of my shots were street photography. I used the 18 – 200mm lens and was bitterly disappointed how its rendered people’s faces in certain light/circumstances. I think if I put the 16 – 70mm lens on it, it would be better. But then I wouldn’t have the range. So I did a counterintuitive thing. I went out and bought the Nikon D750 with the 28-300mm. There are rave reviews about this camera and the separately the lens. And I must say, I am not sorry. The funny thing is, if you look at the increasing weight of the A7RII with the IS and the fact that the lenses for this system are getting bigger (optical necessity) the difference in weight was not that much anymore. So now, I carry my A7R plus 3 lenses and the D750 with one lens. At home if I am traveling by car I have all my other Nikon lenses available to me as well.
This makes my bag a little heavy from home to hotel. But once in the hotel I go out with one or other system.
And I can tell you I LOVE the D750 as a street camera.
So I don’t think the story is over yet.
I will add the Sony RX100 IV to the frey too.
Thanks for your comments Piers. I’ve never used the 18-200mm or the 16-70mm on the A6000. It’s usually my back up camera and sits in the bag but I do travel with only it sometimes. I only use prime lenses on it with the exception on the 55-210mm which is a great travel zoom. Granted there is a definitive image quality difference between it and all my FE lenses. I will check out the D750 when I get a chance. I shot a Fuji Film X30 for a few hours the other day and was super impressed.
