Yukimatsuri The 66th Sapporo Snow Festival

Yukimatsuri – Running around town here at the 66th Sapporo Snow Festival is a blast. One minute it’s ski jumping the next its a rock concert performed on an ice stage in front of a 2/3 scale replica of the ‘Manila Cathedral’ carved out of snow. It took… 2000 Japanese Self Defence Force soldiers 28 days to construct this replica out of 24,000 cubic meters of snow. Yukimatsuri means ‘snow festival’ and this one is held ever year.

One of the main streets in Sapporo is closed down in order to build these fantastic sculptures. During the daytime you can walk around all the food vendors and watch the ski jumping competition which continues after dark. Most of the sculptures are light up at night and they also do a light show.

This  ‘Star Wars’ ice sculpture was my favourite. I wanted to climb up on it and explore all the nooks and crannies.
